The purpose of EVOC 503 WA6 was to attend and report upon what happened at a local school board meeting. The following six criteria were specified:

1.     Comply with all of the General Criteria for Written Assignments.

2.     Attend a local school board meeting and write a brief synopsis of what occurred at that meeting.

3.     Indicate what locality (geographic area) the school board has jurisdiction in and where and when the meeting was held.

4.     Indicate the full name of each school board member and his or her occupational background.

5.     Indicate what the major topic of discussion was and what was, or was not, resolved as a result of the discussion.

6.     Indicate what personal value was derived from attending the meeting.

I believe that the attached proposal meets all six of above listed criteria and respectfully request full credit: one point for meeting each of the above listed criteria.


 

 

GEOGRAPHIC AREA OF THE SCHOOL BOARD'S JURISDICTION

Chaffey College District serves the Cities of Rancho Cucamonga, Ontario, Upland, Chino, Montclair, and surrounding areas of CA, which encompass seven high schools and twenty-seven elementary schools.

WHERE AND WHEN THE MEETING WAS HELD

The meeting of the Governing Board was held in the Staff Dining Room of the college on Monday, January 22nd, from 7:00 to 9:30 PM.

NAME AND OCCUPATION OF EACH BOARD MEMBER

Ms. Kathleen Burger (Board President) - Member of Republican Party

Mr. Gary George - (Clerk of the Board) Manager at Virison

Mr. Paul Gomez - Retired Public Works Manager.  

Mr. Lee McDougal - City Manager, Montclair

Ms.  Katie Roberts - Captain of Police Ontario Police

Mr. Elibardo Villagas - Student Trustee

Dr. Marie Kane - College President

MAJOR TOPIC OF DISCUSSION AT THE MEETING

Several topics were discussed. Fourteen new employees, academic and and administrative were hired. The  Chaffey Foundation has moved to offices in the former children's center. In closed session, the Govern Board  authorized the District to enter into a settlement agreement in connection with the resignation of a management employee. The Board approved new budget allocations, a new Fiscal Accountability policy, and expenditure plan for the Telecommunications Technology Center.  The Board accepted the general fund financial reports and a grant of $150,00 from the San Bernardino County Work Force Investment Board for the construction work force development program..

WHAT I LEARNED FROM ATTENDING THE MEETING

This is the only board meeting of this type that I have attended.  However, I have been active in many other organizations, mostly volunteer, and the subjects and actions are very similar.  I have seen all this before.
