RE: 502, WA6, Little

The purpose of EVOC 502 WA6 was to prepare a proposal for the establishment of a vocational advisory committee in support of the course I would teach in Oceanography. The following six criteria were specified:

1.      Comply with all of the General Criteria for Written Assignments.

2.      Develop a proposal for the formation of a vocational advisory committee for a particular existing course or program. The proposal should be addressed to an appropriate school administrator.

3.      Provide a brief description of the course or program for which the advisory committee will be (or has been) formed.

4.      Clearly define the basic purpose of the advisory committee relative to the course or program indicated above and include information about the major specific functions of the advisory committee.

5.      Describe the steps necessary to go about establishing an advisory committee to serve the course or program described. Include information about recruiting and retaining advisory committee members.

6.      List and briefly describe at least one good resource from which further information about advisory committees can be obtained.

The following sources of information were used relative to this assignment:

1.      Little, Rick - From my own professional experience.

2.      Lowman, Judy - Chaffey College Instructor

I believe that the attached proposal meets all six of above listed criteria and respectfully request full credit: one point for meeting each of the above listed criteria.

RE: Proposal for Oceanography Advisory Committee

Beginning Underwater Basket Weaving is a course designed to acquaint students with the basic principles of underwater basket weaving. The history, materials and techniques of underwater basket weaving are reviewed and students are provided the opportunity to weave baskets underwater. This is a 54-hour course that meets for 1 1/2 hours, twice a week for 18 weeks. Of that time 40 hours is spent in the classroom and 14 hours in the lab. Maximum enrollment is 25 students.

The committee, to be comprised of people from local colleges and industry, will provide advice about what students in the Oceanography course here at Chaffey College should learn in that course in order to prepare them for entry level employment in Oceanography. Establishing and maintaining such a committee would help to insure that our Oceanography course is meeting student needs. It would also provide an excellent basis for a productive school/community relationship.
